Let there be light!

Year One are continuing their inquiry into light. This week has been a busy one with a session in the secondary science lab, a visit to the ELC to explore, our ongoing observations of our sunflowers being grown in the dark and light, development of our individual iMovies on shadows and of course our excursion to the CSIRO.

Our excursion this week to the CSIRO was very interesting. The children were able to explore and experiment with both light and sound. The CSIRO offers lots of great activities for children including holiday programs. As many of the students expressed their interest in this, I have attached the CSIRO kid's page to the blog.  If you select the Double Helix Events link under the Do It section that will take you to their holiday programs.

I have set the children a challenge for Show and Share this week. They need to take a photo of something related to light and explain, using all of their newly acquired scientific knowledge, what the light is doing and why e.g. My leg looks bent as I dangle it in the water because the light is refracting (or bending) as it is moving from the air into the water and the light waves are changing their speed. Refraction tricks our eyes into thinking that my leg is bent when actually it isn't.

Thank you to everyone who has already handed their Fathers Day Breakfast form in. If you haven't yet done so could you please send in this form as soon as possible so that we may organise the catering.
